Poetic Lyrics and why we connect

We connect to poetic lyrics because they speak to emotions we often struggle to express ourselves. Through metaphor, imagery, and rhythm, poetic lyrics capture complex feelings like longing, heartbreak, hope, or joy in a way that feels deeply personal, even when written by someone else. They offer a sense of shared experience, turning individual emotion into universal connection. In just a few lines, a lyric can hold a whole memory, a mood, or a moment, making us feel seen, understood, and less alone. Poetic lyrics give language to the heart. Our writers have chosen poetic lyrics that speak to them, Comment the poetic lyrics you love too.

“Older” by 5 Seconds of Summer is a hauntingly beautiful reflection on love, time, and the inevitability of mortality. The lyrics paint a bittersweet image of a couple dancing their way through the decades as their love grows stronger everyday.

“Skinny Skinny” by Ashton Irwin is a raw, vulnerable exploration of body image, inner turmoil, and the quiet battles we often fight alone. Written from a deeply personal place, the lyrics confront the toxic self-criticism and pressure to conform to unrealistic standards. Ashton speaks to his younger self — and to anyone struggling — with honesty and compassion, revealing the emotional scars behind physical appearance. Anyone who has experienced this before feels seen within these lyrics.

“Piano Man” by Billy Joel is a timeless storytelling song that paints a vivid portrait of loneliness, longing, and fleeting connection. Set in a bar filled with regulars escaping their everyday lives, the lyrics introduce a cast of characters.  A real estate novelist, a sailor, a waitress, each chasing something they’ve lost or never found. The piano man becomes a kind of therapist, offering comfort through music, even as he quietly longs for something more himself. Piano Man is a poetic and heartbreaking reflection of society and loneliness, it makes you ponder the question "what if we all came together and used our arts to make the world a little brighter?"

Daniel Seavey’s “The Older We Get” reflects on the quiet ache of growing up and the bittersweet nature of time passing. The lyrics stab you right in the heart!

Much like Piano Man, this song makes you reflect on society. This passage of the song speak to our writers as a reflection of how depression can feel, yes there are people physically around but nobody speaks on the struggle and they all fade into their own corner of darkness.

One of this generations best songwriters (at least in our opinion) its no surprise that Ed Sheeran made it to this list. Like previously mentioned songs this song reflects on society but unlike the previous songs this one offers a small glimpse of hope.

Just as Daniel Seavey's song does, Landslide reflects on growing up and how life changes in an instant, in a "Landslide"

A poetic classic, Imagine paints a beautiful picture of what the world could look like if we all got along

Disney lyrics are always poetic, but this song in particular is a ever-relevant reflection on society. It speaks against prejudice and invites us to embrace the richness of cultures, nature, and perspectives different from our own.

“Diamonds” by Luke Hemmings is a brooding, atmospheric track that dives into the disillusionment of chasing perfection and the emptiness that can come with it. Much like his previously mentioned bandmate Ashton, Luke's lyrics here poetically speak on mental health struggles and rip your heart out.

“Little Things” by One Direction is a gentle love song that celebrates the quiet, often overlooked parts of someone,  the freckles, the insecurities, the habits they think are flaws. Written with tender honesty, the lyrics speak directly to someone who doesn’t see their own worth, offering reassurance that they’re loved for exactly who they are. It’s not about grand gestures or perfection, but about intimacy and paying attention. The song reminds us that love often lives in the smallest details, and that sometimes, the “little things” are what mean the most.

Another top songwriter of our generation, of course we had to finish on Taylor's Lyrics. This song offers a relatable, painful, look into heartbreak.
