Hello stars, and welcome to Day One of 5SOS Week! Back to the early days of ripped skinny jeans and that good old tally mark, it’s easy to feel a strong wave of nostalgia. Before the massive tours, deluxe albums, and festival stages, there were just four teenage boys from Sydney with big dreams, acoustic guitars, and a knack for writing songs that made the internet fall in love. Let’s rewind to where it all started and look back on the early releases that built 5 Seconds of Summer into the band we know today.
Somewhere New EP (2012)
The Somewhere New EP was the beginning of everything. It introduced us to 5SOS’s signature sound: earnest lyrics, catchy hooks, and the unmistakable spark of a band ready to take on the world. “Unpredictable” set the tone from the start with the line, “Hey, we’re taking on the world,” and little did they know this was exactly where they would be one day. “Out of My Limit” captured that teenage rush of emotion that made fans instantly connect. Then there’s “Beside You”, with the beautifully poetic line, “When we both fall asleep underneath the same sky to the beat of our hearts at the same time, so close but so far away,” a perfect expression of a long-distance relationship. And of course, “Gotta Get Out”. When you hear this song, it’s easy to immediately picture the four teen boys just starting out in their acoustic video, sitting there with big nerves and even bigger dreams. Knowing where they are now makes it an even more special listen.
Unplugged EP (2012)
Unplugged showcased the band’s raw side, stripped back, honest, and overflowing with early passion. “Gotta Get Out (Unplugged)” brings a fresh emotional depth to the fan favorite. “I Miss You (Unplugged)” remains one of their most iconic early recordings. Right from the start, 5SOS were the pop-punk band who stole our hearts, and this Blink-182 cover only solidified that. The vocals on this track remain a strong and defining moment in their history. “Too Late (Unplugged)” gave listeners another glimpse into the band’s early songwriting charm, while “Jasey Rae (Live from Rehearsal/Unplugged)” feels like a time capsule. Their young voices and giggling at the start make this track so special and so distinctly them.
Good Girls EP (2014)
By the time Good Girls arrived, 5SOS were on the cusp of global stardom, but they hadn’t lost their sense of humor or heart. “Good Girls” became an instant fan favorite, such a funny ad-lib track with one of the most iconic music videos in their catalog. “Cause at the back of the room where nobody looks she’ll be with her boyfriend (she’s not reading books).” It’s cheeky, rebellious, and everything early 5SOS stood for. “Just Saying” carried that same energy, unapologetically pop-punk and fun. “Long Way Home (Acoustic)” let their vocals shine, sounding ethereal and magical, while “Good Girls (Live from the iTunes Festival)” proved their live presence was already larger than life.
5 Seconds of Summer (Deluxe Album) (2014)
Their self-titled debut album catapulted them into worldwide fame, but at its core, it still had the heart of four kids who loved their guitars. “She Looks So Perfect”, the song everyone knows and loves, became their signature hit (and yes, it’s the one about underwear). “Don’t Stop” followed, arguably the most iconic 5SOS video in history, and a song so good it gets its own category (if you know, you know). “Good Girls”, “Kiss Me Kiss Me”, and “18” all captured the rush of youth and the thrill of being on the brink of adulthood. Then there’s “Everything I Didn’t Say”, filled with haunting vocals and an even more haunting story painted in the lyrics. “Beside You” returned as a reimagined favorite, while “End Up Here” packed in clever references like “You said you liked my Cobain shirt, now we’re walking back to your place, you’re telling me how you love that song about living on a prayer, pretty sure that we’re halfway there,” and the classic, “Call me lucky cause in the end I’m a six and she’s a ten.” “Heartbreak Girl”, (sorry Calum, but this one’s an absolute banger), tells a story of the friend zone that will break your heart again and again. “Lost Boy” and “Amnesia” brought tears, with “Amnesia” quickly becoming the classic 5SOS crying song. “Social Casualty” hit hard from the first note, with a drop that still makes fans dance, while “Never Be” is the song that still hurts just a little bit after all these years. “Voodoo Doll” captured that dizzying, magical feeling of falling for someone, and “Greenlight” remains one of their most important songs because there is nothing more pop-punk than teenage boys singing about the importance of consent.
She Looks So Perfect EP (2014)
The She Looks So Perfect EP marked the band’s true arrival. “She Looks So Perfect (Mikey Demo Vocal)” showed off Michael Clifford’s signature edge, while “Heartache on the Big Screen” exploded with that big, booming sound that became their trademark. “The Only Reason” brought emotional depth and tenderness to the project, and “What I Like About You” was a lyrical and sonic powerhouse that perfectly captured the band’s chaotic energy. Finally, “Disconnected” proved that 5SOS were more than just catchy hooks; it’s lyrically genius and remains a fan favorite for a reason.
LIVESOS (Bonus Track Edition) (2014)
LIVESOS was where everything came together, a full-circle celebration of the journey so far. Each track from “18 (Live)”, “Out of My Limit (Live)”, “Disconnected (Live)”, “Amnesia (Live)”, “Beside You (Live)”, “Everything I Didn’t Say (Live)”, “Long Way Home (Live)”, and “Heartache on the Big Screen (Live)” radiated energy and emotion. Then there’s “American Idiot (Live)”, a Green Day cover that has gone down as one of the band’s most well-known performances, packed with energy, attitude, and that killer instrumental moment. “Kiss Me Kiss Me (Live/Bonus)” kept the energy high, while “Teenage Dream (Live)”, a Katy Perry moment so funny even if you get the “funchline” wrong, showed their playful side. The album closed with a flurry of power: “Good Girls (Live)”, “What I Like About You (Live)”, and “She Looks So Perfect (Live)”, each one a perfect snapshot of 5SOS in their element, on stage, alive, and unstoppable.
That’s been your Daily Dose of the Sauce, a full dive into the early 5SOS era that started it all. From acoustic beginnings to arena anthems, this first chapter reminds us exactly why we fell in love with them in the first place.
