Exploring Music Genres: Lo-fi
Lo-fi music is short for low fidelity, which refers to sound that is recorded or produced with imperfections. The genre does not aim for studio-perfect sound. Instead, it embraces small flaws such as background noise or slightly off-beat rhythms. This style creates a warm and relaxed atmosphere.
During the 1950s to 1970s, the term ‘low fidelity’ was originally used to refer to poor quality recordings. Many DIY artists would record at home with cheap equipment. It was shaped by experimental scenes such as underground hip-hop in the 1980s to 1990s, with producers using off-beat drum patterns and intentionally imperfect rhythms. Anime soundtracks and platforms like SoundCloud helped to boost lo-fi style beats to wider audiences. However, lo-fi saw its biggest rise in 2015 to 2020, with livestreams popularising the genre. The genre became strongly associated with relaxation and studying. Today, lo-fi has expanded to feature subgenres like lo-fi jazz, ambient lo-fi, and chillhop. It also has more polished production, while maintaining the ‘imperfect’ aesthetic.
The production of lo-fi centers around intentional imperfections such as tape hiss, background noise, and vinyl crackle. Lo-fi tracks typically have simple, loop-based structures to create a steady yet hypnotic feel. It also isn’t overly polished, which helps maintain that raw, relaxed feel. The genre uses a range of sounds such as jazz-inspired instruments, synths and ambient textures, basslines, hip-hop drum kits, digital tools, and found sounds such as rain and city noise. Many lo-fi tracks have no vocals at all, but if they are included, they are soft, distant, or filtered to sound like they are in the background. Sometimes they are chopped or looped samples rather than full verses. The lyrical themes are commonly about loneliness, late-night thoughts, calmness, and nostalgia. However, when lyrics are included they are often not the focus.
Lo-fi features a wide range of musicians who have significantly shaped the genre. Nujabes, a Japanese music producer, blended jazz and hip-hop, creating an emotional and melodic lo-fi sound. He helped shape the genre’s calm, nostalgic vibe. The studio album ‘Modal Soul,’ released in 2005, defined the emotional, jazz-influenced lo-fi sound. The album became widely associated with relaxation and introspection. Jinsang is an American lo-fi hip-hop producer who is a key figure in the modern internet lo-fi scene. His track ‘Affection’ represents modern lo-fi with a simple, loop-based sound. Finally, Nymano, a French music producer, represents the newer wave of clean and atmospheric lo-fi. His track ‘Lost & Different’ uses a smooth, atmospheric beat with soft piano melodies and light drums.
Over the years, lo-fi music has evolved into a globally recognised genre that can be defined by its intentional imperfections and calm atmosphere. The music genre has grown through internet culture and streaming platforms, becoming closely associated with relaxation and study.
